Ricardo’s Wine Vats

This image is from my set of photographs of the Flequer’s Valley wine vats. This set of vats, called “Tines d’en Ricardo” (Ricardo’s Wine Vats), was constructed around the 19th century in the center of Catalonia.

It is curious to notice the large color difference between the upper and lower parts of the vats. This is because the lower part was sealed to prevent any leakage, while the upper part was not. The upper part was only used by the farmers to press the grapes with their bare feet, and hence, sealing was not needed.
