Cathedral of the Sea (Santa Maria del Mar)
A few days ago, I had to go to Barcelona on errands and found myself with enough time to walk around the Gothic district. This part of the city has many places to visit and I find that walking around the streets to be relaxing.
To some, it might not have seemed like the best time to out shooting; the streets were full of people and the sun was so high in the sky. However, I decided to enter inside this basilica: “Santa Maria del Mar.”
Santa Maria del Mar was built between 1329 and 1383 at the height of the Catalonia’s maritime and mercantile preeminence. It is also an outstanding example of Catalan gothic architecture, with a purity and unity of style that is unusual in large mediaeval buildings.
Nowadays, it is also known due to the book “Cathedral of Sea,” a historical novel where the author tells the construction of this building as backstory.
I already added this photo to the wallpapers; feel free to download it at any time.
